Side Street Studio Spotlight: James Higginson

Creator, designer, craftsman, artisan

This first edition highlights the artisan and craftsman @jamesh.works who has worked with Side Street Studio in the creation of several pieces of furniture in the bar and restaurant.

Tiled tables, custom DJ booths and the creator behind them. Handmade by James Higginson, our in-house designer and creator, residing in Les Landes in the south of France.

How did you develop a passion for crafting and building furniture and installations?

“Things began with Lego and Meccano sets when I was a kid. I love creating things that people enjoy using, not just functional but beautiful, tactile and enjoyable. Seeing people using and enjoying things I’ve made, whether that be furniture, structures, sculptures, light fittings, anything really, gives me great pleasure.”

What was your inspiration behind the pieces for Side Street Studio?

“When I first saw Side Street Studios coming together and discussed the vision with Jack, I had

the idea to create these high gloss tables using a pallet of Mid-Century colours that suited the space. If I’m honest they’re not entirely unique, I draw a lot of inspiration from my favourite designers from around the globe!”

Is there a particular process you have developed that you follow for each project?

“I like to minimise waste, use inexpensive materials and above all take care with the work, when a

piece is finished I want to feel proud of it and cutting corners rarely gives you that feeling. Often my pieces are cheap in material terms but are labour intensive. This was definitely the case with the patchwork tables for Side Street Studios, each piece is individually cut to fit which I think comes across in the organic look of them.”

Any advice to people who may have an interest in design and creating but don’t know how to start?

“My advice to anyone wanting to make a start in design is to make contacts, join local maker spaces, use social media to find and engage with creators that inspire you, don’t be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes.”

“Don’t restrict yourself to skills you have when designing, think of what you want to create and learn those skills as you go. If you don’t f*ck up along the way, you’re not trying hard enough!”
